The remarks Ato Gedu made on the incident in Debre Markos were thoughtful and measured. He should be applauded. He knows well all these various incidents flaring up in all part of the country have their roots in the ‘ethnic’ based politics instituted and practiced by his own party, namely EPRDF.
Yet, others are criticizing his remarks and labeled him as a supporter of TPLF. Others, while applauding Ato Gedu, still hold responsible Ato Bereket and TPLF. And, still others list names of the organization they say are from Tigre.
We want to comment on a few of these opinions.
Ato Seretse: ‘
This is nothing more than encouraging lawlessness and mob justice.
For one, no one has proof Ato Bereket was in Debre Markos, and for another, Ato Bereket has every right to be in Debre Markos. Moreover, this is counter-productive to the love and ‘ethiopiawinet’ that is being preached. Are we now saying there are places Ato Bereket and the likes of him are allowed to go and not go? This we believe is total nonsense and should simply be dismissed.
It is an interesting take on the part of Ato Girma; a cleaver twist. Ato Girma wants us to believe this was what Ato Gedu really and actually meant i.e. Yes, it was the work of “ሕወሃት”.
No, Ato Gedu did not say that. We don’t need to read anything into it. It is clear as mud what Ato Gedu said.
Beyond that, Ato Gedu even commended the sacrifices the former leaders of the organization had made and rightly so. Let us name one political party or organization in the world that can rightly claim it never did anything wrong. Obviously, mistakes and lots of them have been made by EPRDF and its member organizations.
What evidence does Ato Girma have to substantiate his claim? In today’s parlance this will pass as ‘fake news’. Ato Gedu did not want to say “ሌባ” because he knows better and that there is no merit to it.
Ato Achamyeleh, on the other hand, ranted about the organization’s composition and he listed members he said are from Tigre. Does he not know there are thousands of people born and raised in Gondar, Wolleo etc and lived there for generations who can trace their lineage to Tigre? What is wrong with that really? They are a bon fide Amhara just like Ato Achamyeleh.
Experience has taught us that not being civil almost always derails any rational exchanges. It can easily result in polarizing both sides more, and can have real negative consequences for all.
Insults are the last resort of insecure people with a crumbling position trying to appear confident. As one wise person puts it, “When you resort to name calling, you have lost the argument”.
